A Big Bike Adventure – Go Bicycle Touring!

If you’ve gotten sidetracked thinking bicycle  touring is all about counting kilometers and subjecting yourself to as much misery as possible, a browse around Blazing Saddles will remind you that cycling is meant to be fun.  These guys reallly  know how to have a good time on a bike.

Henry Brydon and Jamie King  are on an epic charity ride from London to Sydney to raise funds for  Brain Tumour Research and the MS Society.  Having been personally affected by these diseases, they feel very passionate about the charities they are supporting.

A look thorough their online journal is guaranteed to bring laughs .   As someone over 40, I was reminded of what life was like as recent college graduates before life got twisted into something so serious.

This is a real guy trip.  Proof of this being that Henry and Jamie’s longest period without a bath or shower is 27 days.  I’m pretty sure this merits recognition in the Guinness Book of World Records.

Here’s an excerpt from one of their recent updates:

Finally a moment of pride….. As we took on our hardest climb of the trip over the Kosovon mountains into Montenegro ( 6 hour 25km beast) the devil appeared, disguised as a friendly white van man and offered us the forbidden fruit of a lift to the top. Knackered and flagging we were proudly unhesitant in our united response of thanks but no thanks. The devil looked bemused and drove on. We have been rewarded with some of the most stunning scenery and downhill that seems to of gone on for days through the lush and mountainous Montenegrin countryside.

The guys are also master video makers.  The combination of great music and their crazy bicycle touring antics is unbeatable.

Blazing Saddles is inspired by Alastair Humphreys, author of “Moods of Future Joys” and William Shedd’s quote “ships are safe in the harbour but that’s not what ships are built for”

Henry and Jamie are biking for all the right reasons.  Why not follow along as Blazing Saddles criss-crosses Asia on their way to Australia?  You can also connect with them on facebook.

I met Jamie and Henry in Hungary and we cycle together for a very short part of their journey (accompanied by three ticks) and witnessed one of the rare nights when they did have access to a shower!!

I’ve been following their progress since returning from my tour and their writing style is a true reflection of their personalities. They have an amazing approach to life and are not only the most fun cycle tourists I’ve ever come across but intelligent and generous in every way.

Life is for living and these guys are doing it to the max.
